9000 cd electric speedometer repair

How does one go about diagnosing and repairing one of these things? Where am I looking at on the tranny to find the sensor? How do I test it? History: The needle started yumping and then would settle down once it got warmed up, like a cable would, execept this ting aint got no cable? Now nothing, including of course cruise and al lot of other things.

The clue here is that the cruise control is inop. This means it is the sender on the gearbox or the wiring to it which is at fault definately not the speedo.

The sender at the back of the gearbox should be easy enough to find, but possibly hard to see from above with all the other equipment in the way. It looks like a round can, a bit larger than a 35mm film canister, with a wire coming out of the top. There is a large hex fitting on it for something like a 1 inch (approximate size, not actual size) wrench/spanner so that it can be unscrewed. There is also a retaining screw and clip on the side that must be removed before the speed sensor/transducer can be unscrewed. Unfortunately, I couldn't locate this part at my usual online supplier so I can't include a link to a picture.

I haven't needed to replace my speed sensor, but I had to remove it so that I could take out the transmission to replace the clutch.
