'97 NG900 - Lower Control Arm bushing

1997 900/SE Turbo

I have my car in to the local Saab independent experts to have the A/C worked on... while it was there I asked them to look over the front end as I get some vibration under acceleration/load (e.g up a hill on the highway with mid range or higher throttle).

They told me that the bushings in the lower control arms are worn. He referred to them as "the hydraulic bushing in middle of the lower control arm" He said that they could not be replaced and the entire arm had to be replaced. In checking the Haynes manual, it indicates that the center (radius) bushing _can_ be replaced but the inner bushing cannot.

Questions:

  1. what the's best way to check this for wear? You can say "crowbar" but tell me where to lever, where to look for play and how much I should see or not see.

  1. Can the radius arm bushing be replaced ? Does this require a press and skills an advanced DIY guy might not have? Also, is this the bushing that guys sometimes replace with a poly bushing for better handling? Or is that another bushing ?

Thanks, Bob
