c900 inner driver size change?

OK, so I'm replacing the left CV/driveshaft on my '85 Saab 900. Got the old one out without too much swearing and no blood. New one won't go in; turns out the outer races of the 3 needle bearings are about 2mm too large, as compared with the one that came out.

So. Obviously something changed. When? Any thoughts if they gave me the wrong part (newer) or if my car has the wrong tranny in, or something?

At this point, to get back on the road, I'm thinking of keeping my old driveshaft and putting that into the new CV I got from them. Any hints on this? I can't see the snapring I thought would be there, checking manuals next. But I don't think I'll do anything until I get some sort of confirmation about that part changing?

More to the point, if the part did change, I need to know when, so I can tell 'em I have whatever year car the one I need, is really for.

Thanks, Dave Hinz

I would replace the two tripods if I were you assuming the shaft + splines are exactly the same.

Any hints

Did you need a new cv joint or just a boot/gaiter?

See here ... maybe of some help (not much though)

I have seen a photo on the web of a snapring ... I will see if I can find it for you.

[snip] The '86 16vlv 5spd has the 'newer' larger tripod joint. (I believe also the '85 turbos) The shafts are BIGGER dia. The drivers are larger dia also. (Outer joints are identical. Inner boots are interchangable. You just need the earlier tripod driven assy (8vlv '85 ) . (These larger drivers are the same as the NG cars w/tripod units) =20

Err yes there was a change around them. Something also with the driveshafts being about 6 mm different in length (not sure if they were shorter or longer).

The tripod-bearing and inner-CV change is detailed in my parts book... From VIN G2009923 and up, G3007066 and up, and G7011598 and up the later style inner CV, tripod bearing and from what I can make out, driveshafts, are used.

Note that's the US printed parts manual for the classic 900's printed in

1996, so I don't know how those 'VIN' numbers correspond with the real VIN/chassis numbers that we (at least here in Oz) use to key the car into registration and insurance databases.

Haven't checked. Just a press fit then?

The CV is decidedly rattly.

Thanks, that's more info than I had.

Well that's the thing, has to be there somewhere but I'm not seeing it.

Ah, perfect. So yes, the shaft is bigger too now that you mention it. So they gave me the turbo shaft (heh) for the year not the N/A which I asked for. OK so it's their mistake, good to know; I'll go in for an exchange. Doesn't matter so much whose fault it is, I'm not like that, it's just a case of who pays or doesn't pay for the extra shipping and restocking.

Wipe all the grease of the end of the shaft that joins to the CV joint.

Read the above and you should find from the relevant section a link to this page:

circlip is marked You need to open gently the circlip (either with thin circlip pliers by jamming them in the gap or a screwdriver) and then tap the cv away.

I had not realised you needed a CV joint in which case going for the complete assembly (when you get the correct one) is fair enough.

If it helps at all.

It's inside the CV joint, on the engine side, probably covered in grease. The tripod joint is also held on by a snap-ring (circlip?)
