c900 windshield washer: mystery deepens

Hi all, I posted a few days ago that my windshield wipers/washer had started running constantly, and were only stopped when I pulled the headlamp wiper fuse (#8; the car is a 1992). I have now noted that the wipers still work normally, including the intermittent function, and that the windshield washer works normally (except without the headlight wipers moving, due to removed fuse).

So now I think we can officially exonorate the wiper switch in this case.

According to the wiring diagram, the headlight wipers are controlled by the intermittent relay. But as mentioned above, the intermittent wiper function and windshield washing/spraying work normally.

Is the intermittent relay likely to be the problem here? If any of you have some clue, please reply.

Thanks,

John

I did see your original post, but had no ideas - not come across this failure before. I think the only way you're going to get answers is with

1x multimeter, 1x wiring diagram and 6x beers. My money is on a short somewhere.

Heh, thanks for the reply. I have all items on your list of suggested equipment :). Fortunately this is the sort of thing that can wait until I have time to take a good look at it (probably not this weekend but next). I'll be sure to post my findings.

Hi,

The problem is in one of the headlight wiper motor, most probably not the switch or relay.

The headlight wiper motor has a diode that prevents the current from supply to enter the washer/wiper system - if the diode is burned (e.g. it's continuous) one gets symptoms as you describe.

There is a website describing how to R&R the motor assembly - it's for 9k but I think the motor assembly & wiring is about the same...

Quick solution is to detach the wire harness of the wiper motor(s) in the motor end.

Hope this helps,,,, SuoTimo _______________________________

No idea at all - but my 900 isn't allowed to read this group in case it gets creative ideas! You could try spraying contact cleaner on anything electrical in sight that's related to the wipers. Cheap and can't see any downside. Cheers
