Hi
Anyone out there know how long a garage should charge for changing an alternator change.....I recently got charged 5 hours labour for one and I thought that was a bit excessive.
Cheers

Which model?
It took me several days on my 97 900SE. saved a few bucks though. In retrospect, it's not too difficult, I was just unused to working on a Saab (US cars were my specialty). Anyone with experience could have had it off and a new one on in about 1-2 hours.

Should have mentioned....its a 1992 9000 2.3 fpt...
Last time I had this done (by the local Saab dealer) it cost me ?700 for a recon Bosch alternator incl fitting and they charged me 4.5 hrs labour.
This time I went to an auto-electrical specialist and he has put a recon Bosch one on for ?300 incl fitting! He reckons the job takes 2.5 hrs ("...if you know what you are doing, it is a bit of an awkward one, a Saab 9000...." he said)
Thing I am gutted about is that I still have the other car with its nearly brand new alternator which I am gradually breaking up for spare parts. Problem is....it is in Belgium and I, and my other, broken-down Saab 9000, are in Luxembourg.
The same Saab dealer recently tried to sell me a 9000 Aero (the Saab I have always wanted) that broke down on the 10 minute road test!
This may not be the most gifted Saab dealer in the world!

Which model? On, for instance, a Saab 96, it's 15 minutes work. A lot has changed in 25 years, though.
Sorry reply should have gone to the group, Saab book time for an alternator change on that model is 1.2 hours to remove and refit.....Regards, Tom.
Sounds like the difficult part is dislodging and restoring the belt.
Yes. So hack the head off of it wth a dremel tool cutoff wheel, and replace it from the _other_ side. Much easier to get at.

What do you say about the 94 9000CS turbo belt?
Took me about 2 hours and probably the same to put one back. Access is via the inner wheel arch, then the belt has to come off followed by the power steering pump.
Others have said drill a hole in the wheel arch lining and then remove by the inlet manifold.
It's not difficult, just a little time consuming.
David.
