Check Gearbox/Check Engine Lights

This is my first winter with a 1997 900SE Turbo Convertible. This morning was especially cold, and I was leaving the house early. I started the car and turned on the window defrosters. Let everything warm up until the ice melted. Put the car in drive, and it didn't move. Thought maybe the tire was jammed against the curb, so gave it some gas. It slowly inched forward. Weird. Figured it was just really cold, and proceeded slowly. After about 2 blocks, the 'check gear box' light came on. Turned around to head back home, and the 'check engine' light came on. Parked it. Looked in the owner's manual, which said to restart it - to reset the system - and see if the lights still come on. They did.

Is there anything I should try (in addition to checking fluid levels), before spending my Christmas cash at the local repair shop?

Update: It's 8 degrees warmer this morning. Started the car, and everything is back to normal. No warning lights, no sluggishness. It couldn't really have been the temperature that caused those problems, could it? I mean, Saabs are built for cold winters, right?

They have Celsius degrees in Sweden, what do you have over there? Maybe it just got confused? ;)

Of course there might _really_ be something wrong with the gearbox... ask a dealer or a specialist where you live, they all seem to have left this group :(

Good luck, Richard.

LOL! Instead of being sour over the gearbox, why not be happy that the engines last so much longer than the average Ford inspired engine? :-P

Saabs are built for those who don't believe that gearboxes matter. Thirty years of driving Saabs- Thirty years of looking for replacement gearboxes. Models span 96,95/V4, 99,99EMS,900, 900NG 9.3 - all have crappy gearboxes. What Henri Ford learned in the 1920's, and every other manufacturer since has followed is lost on unfortunate Saab owners, who must spend their lives looking for replacement gearboxes

Leaky old Fords, otherwise known as Found On Road Dead! Wouldn't touch another one, owned 4 between myself and the Missus, dreadful cars.

I've been driving Saabs, as has my wife for the last 6 years. 2 9000's, 1

900s, and 2 C900's. Never had a gearbox problem yet.

Maybe it's the way you drive them?

That is complete and utter rubbish! If you thrash/fang your car (doesn't have to be a Saab - any make/model) you're going to break something eventually. If you don't thrash/fang your car, you'll find it lasts a long time with proper 'care and feeding'.

If you're so full of yourself, why not buy a Bugatti Veyron and give your money to VW so you can crash it just like the Top Gear guys did. Then come back and see what you think about it 30 years later (if any of the Veyrons last that long).

Sounds like you are a pro-GM pundit who is against Saab having it's own unique identity to stand out from the boring GM product line... 8-)

Craig.

From a US point of view, Saab could stand out against GM just by building reliable cars (but something even more difficult to do, given GM's involvement now).
