Help please - miscellaneous probs with '93 9000 CSE 2.0 LPT Part 1

Hello all.

I'd long had a fancy for a Saab. I first looked at one at a dealer's about 10 yrs back. I remember sitting in a 9000 and thinking it was rather large !

Anyway - my old vehicle was 'on the way out' so I had to replace it.

I was using Ebay at the time so looked there. Found a trade seller with good feedback so bought one off him.

It turned out to be a 'lemon' as we say in the UK. So many miscellaneous faults I hate to mention. In the ensuing corresepondence I offered to sue him ! I got my money back and kept the car !

A shame really. I liked the idea of a nice 9000 and hope to own one some day. In the meantime however I need to sort what I've got !

There's a few things that seem straightforward to fix and a few that aren't !

I would be very grateful for any advice.

Most of the probs are electrical so I'll start with the one that isn't !

  1. Engine fails to rev - low power.

Symptoms - floor the accelerator - engine revs only to about 5200 rpm in

3rd, 4700 rpm in 4th, 4500 rpm in 5th. Feels like a rev limiter cutting in. On longer runs the problem may be better but the effect recurs occasionally. Not possible to exceed 100 mph.

Suspect fuel starvation. Had something vaguely similar but less troublesome in a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0i - just went low power occasionally. Seemed to be fixed when the fuel filter was replaced.

This Saab has had a new fuel filter specifically fitted within the last

20,000 miles. Should still be OK. Maybe a previous attempt to cure this problem ?

Other obvious candidate is the fuel pump - low pressure. Any ideas if this can be determined by testing ?

In short, any way to find the reason for this ?

Seeing as this is the only non-electrical issue - I'll post this separately.

Thanks, Graham

Looked at the air filter when I first bought the car ( only 4000 miles back ) to see if it needed replacing. It was very clean.

No idea about the cat. It passed the emissions test, also about 4000 miles back, fine ( when this problem was already there ) so it seems to be working ok. I assume you're thinking back pressure ? I've no idea of the history at all.

I had the CAT replaced on my 1993 9000 CSE LPT a couple of years ago, it did help quite a lot. The car always passed the emission tests. The symptoms were poor running and hesitation and the test was that the CAT rattled when knocked. I don't know it that's any exact test, but taking the age and many short journeys into account, I decided to replace it.
