Leaky sunroof

Guys, I just bought an 87 Saab 9000 Turbo. It is a great car but could use a bit of maintenance.

It has a moon roof/sun roof that leaks during car washes and strong rain.

Is this a common problem? Is there a simple fix? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

2 posibilitys.

Leakkage because of blocking of the water leads Or the rubber between the window and the frame has "gone".

The waterleads you can check yourselfe. Just pour in some water at each end and check if and where it comes out.

If the rubber has gone is a job for a specialist.

The heavy rain of last week meant I got a lap full of water as I drove off the next day. Oh dear, blocked drain holes.

I have a 1995 9000.

If you look there are drain holes in each corner of the bodywork well, which you can see when the sunroof is open. The two at the front are easy to see, the rear ones not at all easy.

Poured water into the well to test the drain holes. I parked the car on a slope and tested the fronts - blocked, then turned the car around and checked the rears holes - unblocked.

I then cleared the blockages trying the following methods:

The first was probably the wrong way. I pushed a length of electric cable down the holes are far as I could until it stopped - about 3 feet down !. I then prodded and rodded for a while but no success.

Then I grabbed a short length of plastic hose (from my garden fountain pump !), cut the end so it fitted the drain hole and was airtight and then BLEW down the holes. Success !!! I then poured loads of water down the holes to wash them out, and ended up with a large pool of water under the engine bay .

All seems OK now. There is bound to be a bit of leakage around the seals, which is why these drain holes exist.

P.S. I once paid a main dealer to clear the same problem on another 9000 I owned several years ago and I am sure they charged me about £70.00 plus VAT for the privilege.
