Looking for help on 1994 Saab 9000 CSE

My mechanic just threw in the towel. I wouldn't be so upset, but emotional attachment to the car caused me to replace the exhaust, DI cassette, CV boots, breaks, battery and various other stuff over the past six months.

In fact, my car just spent a full month at the mechanic. Less than a week after getting it back, I went to start the car in the grocery store parking lot. I started just fine, ran for about 10 seconds and quit. It turns over normally, it just doesn't fire.

The fuel pump is operating, there is current going to the DI cassette. He checked the CPS.

He said he cannot find the ignition wiring diagram on Alldata, and he would need this to continue.

I am 2.5 hours away from the nearest Saab mechanic. Any ideas on what he should be diagnosing?

Fuel - Spark - Air

If (and only if) all those are present, then engine will fire when turned.

Probably, the fuel doesn't get to the engine.

Well, does it give you an error-code on the dash? If so, which?

How? Turn the ignition to "On" (without starting the car). Watch the yellow/orange "Engine" text on the dash. It will light up for a few seconds. It should then just disappear. If there are errors, it will instead flash a number of times (1 - 7). It might even indicate two errors ex. first flash 7 times, the pause, and then flash 3 times.

No go watch, and then get back to us with the number of flashes. This will give you a VERY good indication on where to start. ;o))

Or else, go to the Saab dealer and have him rwad out error-codes or general operating data on the car - using his Saab TechII tester..

Cheers!

That would be my inclination. However, the mechanic said the plugs were wet, which I took to mean the injectors are delivering gas. Is that wrong?

Did the mechanic sniff the spark plugs? Could be water leaking in through a failed head gasket? If it was indeed fuel, the cause is one of the other two...

My '95 had a similar problem - it was the crankshaft position sensor.

Sounds like you need a different one. Is there much choice in your area ?

Had the same symptoms here on an 1995. Checked the position sensor, it was fine, turned out the be the fuel pump. Since your mechanic checked that In your case, I would bet the position sensor as well. Fairly easy to replace, if you can get underneith the car, just jacking it up is enough.
