Lower Control arm Right and Left Hand sides

I have estimates from 2 shops both about $1600 for the front lower Control arms to be replaced. It is a 1997 900 Turbo SE Manual with 107k miles on it and fun to drive. bought it from a friend for $3500. Should I go ahead and replace these or try to sell it?

Thank you.

P.S. more less serious questions later.

Do it yourself. It's not that hard, and if you can borrow the tools your way ahead. Hell, even if you had to buy new tools you'd still be way ahead!!

That's a pretty serious DIY job Fred.I would not suggest it to a newbie.

The prices sound high. What are they charging for parts on the estimates and what parts are they replacing ?

Very good question Bob;

I have estimates from Dobbs and Mieneke. They are both listing about $1200 for right and left Lower control arms and something else for $90. Sway bar kit or something which may contain bushing or whatever.

Now I have found these parts on some internet site for $169 for the part for my car. So after market parts? may cost about $300-$400. I am not just sure if these are the right parts for my car since the SAAB was manufactured in Sweden according to VIN decoding.

Thank You very much for any help.

here is the parts I am talking about:

How would I find out if these are the right parts for my SAAB?

Yeah, most SAABs are manufactured in Sweden.

These people are also very good to deal with.

I agree with Fred, check Eeuroparts.com. Quality customer service & quality parts. I've heard mixed results on some Scantech parts, YMMV. Whatever eeuroparts lists is correct for the car.

I would not let Mieneke work on the car. I'm not familiar with Dobbs. I would suggest finding a local shop that specializes in Saabs (sometimes Saab/Volvo,etc). The front end on the '97 900 has some unique ways to wear and a good Saab shop will know what to look for. It's not unusual for the control arms (actually, the ball joints or the bushings) to wear so it's not an unusual diagnosis - but you really want a Saab specific guy to tell you what's wrong.

What are the symptoms you are encountering ?

Thanks for suggestions: as far as symptoms, it just rides a little rough on small bumps or when I turn left; it does not feel very smooth. I have not heard any noise accept maybe when hitting a bump. I know it needs suspension work. The bushings are all worn out and Lower control arm on the right hand side has made a hole when it attaches to sway bar.

Other wise a very fun car to drive. great car and it also looks great.
