new 9-3 back wheels blackened...????

Help! Just bought a new 9-3 (was that a mistake?)--on a 1500 mile road trip away from home dealer, and I notice that my back wheels are really dirty and black, much worse than the front wheels. This is a lot more than normal road dirt, and I?ve been on dry interstates. Any idea what this is or what I ought to do about it? Thank you--Anne

You may just have softer brake pads in back than in the front, or it's possible the rear brakes are dragging but that's unlikely.

Suggest that you have it seen to by someone reputable. I do not care to mess with brakes. Yours sounds exactly like what was described and is not an immanent hazard but something which requires attention.

Oh golly, that?s the kind of thing I was afraid of...thanks---as soon as the dealerships open on Tuesday, I?ll be there! Anne

Why the rush? As he said it's not a safety issue, just get it looked at when convenient. Also unless the car is under warranty, forget the dealer. Find a good independant shop and you'll save a lot of $, all the dealer is really interested in is selling you a new car.

Hi, James, Well, it?s a brand new car, so this should be free at any dealership, yes? Or so I?m hoping! But if not, I?ll go to an independent as you suggest---so it?s not really asafety thing? When it was about brakes I guess I freaked out a little... I know no one can reallly know without having a look, but... anybody ever had this before? I looked at it last night after driving400 miles and the dust looked kind of, um, reddish. Anyway, thanks for writing--appreciate the help---Anne

Oh, brand new, yeah in that case hit up the dealer for sure, for some reason I had the idea it was a few years old. It's not a safety issue, it's just brake dust, but it's a pain to clean.
