OG 900 T stalls at 3500

Hi all! I have a '87 900T8 which performs rather nice, but as the winter is coming following problems have surfaced: o Engine stalls between 3000 and 4000 with 3rd gear and above, with

1st and 2nd there are no obivious delays o The engine does not knock. This was confirmed with a tester. o When started up in cold weather it seems to run with three cyls at first. After heat rises, the problem disappears o When the engine stalls the electricity does not disappear nor does the tachymeter die.

The spark plugs and wires are quite old, should I change them in the first place?

Stalls as in completely cuts out? What do you mean by delays?

So what exactly happens? You're driving along, you hit 3500rmp, the engine just dies? Or does it just lose some power?

Definitely, it's not even worth trying to troubleshoot this type of thing with old ignition components. Change the plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, air filter and fuel filter as a minimum.

What are the symptoms of a plugged charcoal canister? I have recently been having LOTS of problems with my '83 900T (see my posts below, subject "need help badly"). I found a cracked outlet vacuum hose on top of the charcoal canister so I replaced that vacuum line, about the time the car started to a) start hard or not at all and b) idle really poorly when cold until I give it a good run on the highway after which it idles just fine. By really poorly I mean it sounds and feels like it's running on 3 cylinders but my plugs all look about the same...

When it's first started and running rough, I cannot raise the idle speed about about 850 with the idle adjustment screw... I screw it out and out and out, no change, then when the bolt actually unseats there's a "foomph" of vacuum loss and the car stalls.

I've done flow rate check on the fuel system but not pressure as I don't have all the (non-standard thread) fittings for the Bosch fuel distributor. I've tested the injectors for atomization, #2 drips a bit when the diaphragm is fully closed but the spray pattern looks good for all 4. Fuel pump is relatively new, less than 25K miles on it.

Also, what would the symptoms be if the warm-up regulator is toast?

Thanks.

coincidental.
