Oil Cooler Hose seems to be leaking- 1994 900SE Turbo

I'm seeing massive leaks from my 1994 900SE turbo. The leakage is from the lower front right hand side of the car (between the serpentine belt and the front bumper). I was told this might be from the oil cooling hoses as they are completely rusted and the surrounding area is soaking wet.

The car had been leaking for a while, and as such I thought to switch to synthetic 10W40 for my last oil change- seems like I made a mistake as the oil leak got worse. Not too concerning however, as the leak is so bad, that I'm sure all the synthetic oil has since drained out.

Any advice on how to change these hoses or check for common o-ring foul-ups in the area? Would it be best to give it to the Dealer, or is this something that can be done in a driveway with a couple of hours of time?

No- it's a 5 speed.

Then there are no oil cooler lines per se. If you have a turbo, there are some metal lines that bring oil to the turbo. The only other places I can think of a leak coming from on that side would be under the head (head gasket), the timing cover (end of the engine) the valve cover (top of the engine).

I think the best course is to get some engine cleaner. Spray it all around under there then carefully wash it down. Let it dry, drive a little, locate the leak using a mirror or with the car on jack stands.

Don't use a lot of water when you wash and/or keep the electronics dry (DIC on top of engine or cap/rotor if non-turbo). It's worth wrapping that stuff in aluminum foil to keep it dry. Too much water is not a good idea, especially if it gets into the DIC or other electronics. Let the engine dry completely before starting it.

Hmmm... interesting. There is oil leaking from the valve cover under the DI Cassette. But the majority of oil is leaking in the bottom front end of the car, where there appears to be two metal hoses which are completely rusted.... I was told these hoses are oil cooling hoses.

Perhaps they are the oil lines that run up to the turbocharger?

Took it to SAAB today. According to them, I do have Oil Cooler Hoses, and they are leaking. Anyone with any experience in replacing these?

Hi,

the normal procedure is to first get new hoses, then remove the old ones, then put the new ones on.

Richard.

Richard- you're an idiot, but you made me laugh. I need to know what to watch for, whether to drain the oil, where the danger spots are etc. etc.

Dear Saint, thats all there is to it. Sorry to bust your dream of great adventure and risky business. ;-) Wasnt all the oil gone anyway?

My guess is that it would take about 1 hour for someone who knows about these things. It is a basic repair, thats why. Just do it, or have it done. :)

Good luck, Richard.

PS: I skipped a bad joke about danger spots... ;-)
