Power Sunroof - Big Trouble

Hi all,

I think I have a very serious sunroof problem:

I have a 1991 900S with a power sunroof. Today the roof got stuck about an inch open. The motor seems to be working but the roof doesn't move at all. The motor seems to be intact so I guess this means that the cable(s) are broken (also, I've tied manually cranking the motor but it doesn't work any better)? That would be an awful repair, so I'm hoping someone has another suggestion on what it could be.

Two specific questions:

1) Why are there two cables running to the roof? I would guess that each pulls on one side of the sunroof. But if this were the case it would be unlikely for both to fail at the same time and I would think that the roof would move (especially if it was also being manually pushed on) if one was still intact.

2) My Bently manual gives instructions for removing the sunroof that start with 1. open sunroof and remove front screws. My roof is mostly closed and won't budge, so this is a serious issue. There must be some way to resolve this, though.

3) Any ideas are all that will at least get the damn roof shut all the way.

Thanks a lot.

First check that the plate on the side of the motor that covers the drive gear to the cables has not become loose, [common fault], Thus allowing disengagement from the drive cables. It is also possible that the drive gear has stripped its teeth. In the meantime you can close the roof by undoing said plate and removing the cables from the motor and close the roof by pushing and pulling on the cables. HTH, Tom.

Thanks Tom. The side plate had indeed come off. It's all back together now and I think it's going to be okay. Thanks for the advice!

Sunroof inoperable

I too have had this problem, but I managed to get the sunroof closed. More luck than anything else, I think. Anyway, I took a good look today and found that the motor had come adrift from the cables. It's held by three bolts and I only had two, which were both very loose! I tightened up the two I had and looked around for a third, but couldn't find anything. I've use cable ties in the meantime and I'm off to find a suitable bolt ... and a strong cable connector, since my wife has just nearly blown herself up with the lawn mower :)

Thanks for the advice Tom,

Paul
