I use a torque wrench and copper washers. I have rounded off an oil drain plug before-- rather a frightening thing to have happen. The lessons learned:

  1. Beware of over-torqued drain plugs

  1. Use 6-point sockets whenever possible

  2. The Sears bolt remover sockets ("Bolt-out") are really handy. I believe Irwin makes a similar product.

Or just make sure you use Snap-On flank drive sockets. These grab on the flats, not the points. I have seen others using Sears Craftsman sockets (point grabbers) on rusted bolts, only to slip and round. I then used a Snap-On socket and the bolt comes right out. I believe Mac and Proto also have similar products. You only have to buy quality once in your lifetime . . . or cuss for 6 hours at every oil change.

I'm a little sensitive to that when I'm riding my Ducati! Thanks to everyone for their help. To be fair, the dealership did pick up the parts and labor for a new pan. Even though it sounds like they are B.S.ing me, it didn't cost me a dime (and I still have 10,000 miles or

8 months left on my warranty).
