Saab 95 diesel estate auxillary heater

The aux heater kicks out alot of smoke when running. Is there are quick cure for this (can it be cleaned out. If left running does the smoke stop?) or does the unit need replacing.

We are turning the heater off so that it is not used - which is probably making the situation worse as it is leaving a small amount of unburnt fuel in the unit.

It should. The handbook for my 2000 9-3 recommends running the heater in the summer to prevent unburnt fuel collecting and causing it to smoke, but here it is referring to those machines with the optional parking heater upgrade. My TiD has the heater but it's only used when the donk is running (when ambient air temperature is under 5 degrees and the coolant temperature is under 75 degrees).

I'd try running the unit for a bit to see if it clears up; what fuel do you use in it? I've only run the 9-3 on Shell since buying it in May and it didn't use the heater until November, but there's no smoke from it.

There is a heater that burns diesel to heat the cabin and speed up the warm up of the engine
