Saab SIDS

My sid has gotten to the unreadable point - i need to get a new one. I tried the fix of tightening the cable connection to no avail. If i could live without it, i would, but from what i understand, it has things like the dashboard bell inside etc, so replacing it with something else that can tell me the time is not an option...

But my reason for posting was to know: Can i get a used one? I've looked up prices online, and they're rather expensive - i'm sure the dealer adds a premium as well (i will ask on monday).

I would imagine that, as with most everythign in the dash, it needs to be synced with the computer. Could the dealer reset it to a new car?

Thanks, Brenden

did you try the fix of adding a couple of strips of foam on top of and underneath the glued-on connector on the SID and then waiting a couple of days for it to settle in.

That solved my problem

As for another, I bought a used one off the internet one time, but it too was bad so I sent it back. I put it in the car and it mated up just fine, just that there were more pixels out on that one than the one that I had. I finally bit the dust and took mine apart and put the foam into it.

go here for directons on how to fix.

I've got the same problem. Go to the Saab dealer and insist they fix the proble. Better yet, call Saab first This problem occurs almost in every Saab and is very annoying. The factory HAS to know about this problem because almost everyone complains about it. How about class action everyone who has a problem with the CID?

They have, it's been redesigned years ago. How old is the car in question? Has it had the display replaced due to the TSB regarding this?

"Almost everyone" is not an accurate description of the population affected by this problem.

How about you go learn that this has already been dealt with, and nicely ask your dealer to take care of it (even if the car is past the warranty period)? If you approach them rationally (in other words, not spouting "Class action lawsuit" when you do so), there's a good chance they'll take care of it for you. Make it easy for them to want to help you, especially if it's out of warranty and they have no obligation to do so.

Saab paid for a new tranny for my 900, when the one in the car blew up. It was 30,000 miles out of warranty at the time, but they took care of it as a goodwill gesture (hell of a gesture...). If you come at this with the approach of "I'll never buy another Saab because of this", their incentive to make you happy is zero.

'96 900S. I asked the dealer about the TSB on this issue but I was told by the service manager that there is no such thing. So now I know that service managers who work at Saab dealerships lie and I should not trust them anymore than I can trust the cars they sell.

It may not be a TSB, but it might be replacable under "customer satisfaction".

1) he could be lying.

2) he could not know.

3) he could be telling the literal truth. (but not the actual one)

4) He could just not want to be bothered.

I *think* that the design problem I have heard of most is the one for the 9-5 or 9-3, and *that* one might have been replaced. Not having a

900, nor privy to such information, I can't say more.

Mine's been unreadable for a year ('99 9-3). Dealer wants $525 plus 1 hour of labor. Seems awfully expensive to me, but it is driving me nuts.

Mine is screwed up, too. Saab has known of this defective CID for years but never fixed the problem. My next car will not be a Saab.

What is this CID which you write about? If you mean the SID then Saab has done several things. Extended the warranty/goodwill period to, I think, five years. Lowered the price. It should not be $525! Designed a new SID for model year 2004 cars.

If you switch brands due to small details like this, you will run out of brands.

They *have* fixed the problem, didn't you make that accusation here a couple of weeks ago also? Go to your dealer, and approach them rationally, and they may even take care of it as a goodwill gesture even if it's out of warranty.

Go in there with "my next car will not be a Saab" attitude, and they have no incentive to try to make you happy. But, saying it hasn't been fixed is not a true statemement.

To the original poster, I don't have the link right now but if the dealer won't take care of it, if you're comfortable with very mild do-it-yourself electronics, you can fix it yourself...just ask, someone can post the link (saab9-5.com I think, but not sure).

Can you show the extension of this said warranty? I called the Saab dealer a few months ago, mentioned the problem and asked about the extended warranty, which I read about in this newsgroup. I was told by the service manager that it was not so. If you can show me some sort of proof maybe I can repeat my quest with the dealer. Thanks.

These extended goodwills are never published and I think it is up to each individual dealer exactly how the extended goodwill is used. The extended goodwill is five years or 100000km here in Sweden, but I have no information about the situation in other countries. It is a possibility that the goodwills are decided by the importer and that it varies from country to country.

My SID has been working on and off for about 8 months. When the car has been running for a while, all the pixels return, otherwise, it's scattered. But the dealer quoted be $250 + labor. Go figure.

Saab fixed the cowl of my 2000 9-5 under goodwill because the original design captured too many leaves and clogged the intake. Unfortunately, while resetting the cowl, they placed the wipers about 5 inches too high on the windshield!! But they were nice enough to rest the wipers, but not after pointing out that other 9-5's on the lot didn't have the wipers that high up!! ha
