troublesome turbo

Okay Im a Saab learner. I got given a 900 t16 1987 from a mate and have been working on it for its MOT. Thing is I replaced the buggered Turbo due to james bond smoke screen on tickover, Put the recon one on and I couldnt be sure If I havent got some vacuum hoses in the wrong place. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a diagram that depicts the vacuum hoses and where they go, cause no one seems to know. and worringly theres a new puff of smoke when the accelerator is released when the turbo is spinning fast. Please dont tell me I ve knackered my recon turbo! Any help would be greatly recieved, ta. Derek

The Haynes has a reasonable set of diagrams, the Bentley has a better set. But I don't get it - how many could you possibly have needed to disconnect to get to the turbo? There's only one that connects directly to the turbo (well, to the waste gate actuator).

This is classic turbo seal failure. When you say recon, do you mean it was rebuilt, or was removed from a car, given a wipe down and called 'reconditioned'?

Yup, it sure does.

And doesn't that one go straight to the APC solenoid or am I thinking about a different one?

In article , snipped-for-privacy@bouncing-czechs.com spouted forth into alt.autos.saab...

Derek emailed me off list, with his emissions test results. I've asked him to post back to the group for your opinions as I'm still pretty much the turbo novice myself.

The last turbo had a oil feed tube that was split at the banjo and leeking like a stuffed pig - prob the reason the turbo was knackered, so that was replaced. I wanted to avoid taking the inlet manifold off so it was a bit fiddly add to boot the vacuum hoses being old and brittle they got pulled

The turbo was a complete replacement from a well recomended specialist AR Turbo if you know them. I got a warranty?!? Just got some emissions results back off it CO 1.61%vol HC 84ppm CO2 10.1%vol O2 5.53%vol There Doulble Dutch to me but the CO levels high and the HC is low apparently. Ive got Haynes 90 99 900 79-93 which covers to many injection types to be in depth enough. Wanted to avoid the cost of a Bentley but If I could get a more specific book Id pay the money.

Puff of blue when lifting off from high boost/high RPM condition is a definite sign on wear of the turbine oil seal. When under pressure from the exhaust gas flow the 'slack' is taken out of the seal, when lifting off the volume of exhaust gas reduces and the seal opens up again. Time for a re-build, kits start at about 75quid and if your handy with a spanner and patient its not hard.

Define vacuum hoses and I'll let you know on that.

Cheers Matt

Would the Saab Factory manual be good enough? I had a 1986 900 and got the factory manuals. I can get the information you want and get it to you, if you want it. I am not sure if anyone scanned the manuals and has them online for viewing.
