UK SAABs has closed

Blimey! Not a word to any members and apparently the moderators only got to find out within the hour of closure. UK SAABs was a UK SOC-affiliated forum board. There has been a lot of infighting and bad press against the UK SOC recently and I wonder if that has led to the closure.

Anyway ... I'm sure there will be another UK-orientated SAAB forum board spring up soon, but if you want to talk Classic 900s (mostly about Special Editions) I will shamelessly plug my forum at:

I'd be surprised if it was anything else.

Having read the threads about the 2008 national - and the previous ones - I am convinced that I was right not to join the SOC.

Is another one _needed_? There's SaabNet (visually very dated and difficult to navigate), SaabScene (fairly quiet) and SaabCentral (busy) already.

I can't find the GWS forums now, either. Perhaps the Castle Combe National is no more?

Fighting talk, eh? :) Yup ... specialist forums are always good. I'm keeping mine strictly Classic 900 and for the most part Special Editions. SAAB Central is a good place to be ... international membership, lots of talk, advice and instruction. SAAB Scene smells and SAAB Net is ... well ... quite odd.

Definitely wasn't earlier today.

GWS pulled the event completely at the weekend after the SOC published the minutes of the showdown meeting, which GWS seemed to reckon had been written at a different meeting from the one they were at.

SaabCentral have three dedicated c900 forums. Workshop, Performance and Project Cars. SaabScene has a dedicated c900 forum.

The biggest problem with UKSaabs was that there weren't different model forums, t'is true.

Blimey! Again! I started reading something about minutes, but got a little bored. I didn't know enough about the politics to start with. I did read that the UK SOC was offering free entry to the National for people who join now. Really it ought to have been the other way around

- attend the National and get a free year's membership.

They do indeed. I've been posting there for a while (well, not SAAB Scene - I do post very occasionally there, should the truth be told). I was on SAAB Central when it was saab900.com ... in fact, I seem to remember the notion of creating saab900.com was discussed here by Paul, or was it Chris? Anyway ... someone will find it back in the archives, no doubt. I've not looked at SAAB Scene, but the Brits seem to be migrating in droves to SAAB Central. Funny how SAAB Central grew out of a general dissatisation with SAAB Scene and UK SAABs from SAAB Central. Let's hope SAAB Central doesn't combust backwards, starting a trend or we'll be back to SAAB Net ... or, God 'elp, Usenet :)

Office politics...

I think the plan was that the non-member entry price was going to be about the same as membership, so you would have been able to join on the gate and get in free.

So would the last member to leave the SOC kindly put the chairs on the tables and turn out the light...

What a croc!

I was a member in 2005 and 2006, and was stunned that a club that charged each member £30 a head seemed incapable of putting on a decent National event. Hell, I'd have paid another £10 per car for entry if it had been a good do.

Yeah, yeah I've heard all the "it can only be what the members make it........ it's always the same people doing all the work........ if you can do it better you do it" claptrap.

SOC has people who put themselves up to be secretary, chairman, etc etc They have to carry the can for it not working, not us poor bloody infantry. We have to turn up and explain to our kids why we've just driven for an hour and half to find none of the things Daddy promised are available today.

They won't be getting any more of my cash for a long time, frankly I see no benefit to membership, and I don't think I'm the only one.

Wasn't the 2005 show the one where they had a whole cowshed full of antique cars to show, but didn't tell anyone? Or, was that a rumour? Bloomin' nothing happening that year, but the Keswick show the year before was even more dull. I skipped 2006 and found something more interesting to do - pairing up divorced socks and watching the grass grow :)

The best thing about the 2005 show was meeting Stuart (from Worcester) in Shirley just off the M42 and tearing up the brand new M6 toll road ... well, we paid for it ... 100 ... 110 ... 120 ... 130 ...

And after looking in the new forsales, to see if the there is a 9-5 diesel for sale, I have a look in the classics and see my old 900 T16S that I regretted selling.

I know the ad has been there since October, but I hope it hasn't sold yet.

I handed back the 'orrible brand new rental diseasel Golf this evening and got into my freshly unbent T16.

It was like walking back into the front door of your own home after a week staying in some bland faceless corporate hotel.

When I went from a Celica back to my second T16 (a convertible), it felt really weird. It was ok after a couple of hours, but it felt like stepping back into a tractor.

I used to work at a dodgy financial services company in N-----h, where we used lots of Saabs. I was familiar with the brand.

When I bought my 9-3 TiD and stepped into it, I too had that "old" feeling from it.

But as you say it's more a faithful companion old really... :)

99's and 900's I really don't feel right driving anything else!
