West Yorkshire, UK - Trip to Whitby 2nd June 2007

Hi guys - All are welcome to the West Yorkshire SAABers trip to Whitby, home of fish, chips and Dracula!

The best chippy in Britain (according to Rick Stein) is in Whitby, some great pubs, a great run of shacks selling all manner of freshly caught sea food, Tate Hill Sands (where Dracula landed), Whitby Abbey, a cardio-workout to climb the several hundred steps up to the Abbey ... Etc.

We'll be in the town on the 2nd June 2007. There is some consideration being made to meeting at Runswick Bay between 12 and 1 (over lunchtime), having a nose at each others SAABs, a kick around the beach - football, frisby, dog exercising, etc and then onto Whitby early afternoon. I will finalise the route a few of us are taking from the Bradford/Leeds area nearer the time and give full details about where we're meeting and where to expect to find us a what time.

Hope to see some of you there.

Keep an eye on this thread on UK SAABs for updates, but I will post the final details here nearer the day:

Sorry mate can't make it :-(

I'm afraid it's the wife's birthday and we'll be in Brittany :-))

I'll raise a glass of fizzy French plonk to the WY Saabers though!

You did say June was out, but I'm afraid May was "out" for more people. Have a great time in Brittany ... Tell me how you got on, because I think I'd like to go this summer. We'll raise a pot of cockles, or a dressed crab to you and yours while we're in Whitby :)

What about another Sunday lunch with the "regulars" when you get back?

Sunday lunch sounds good, though with Le Mans the weekend after I get back(boy my life is tough!) and my lads football (soccer to our US friends here!) trophy day the weekend after that, it's going to be end of June beginning of July. I'll try and convince the good lady to attend with munchkins in tow next time.

Route planning. See:

... Essentially:

Departure: 09:30 prompt from Shipley, West Yorkshire. Anyone else wishing to start from Shipley is also welcome ... Please let me know who to expect.

We're going to proceed through Apperley Bridge, Yeadon, down to Pool and use the Hunters Inn car park as a rendezvous point for anyone coming from that side of Bradford.

Rendezvous #1 09:50-10:00 - Hunters Inn, LS21 2PS Google Map:

Keeping on the A658, the next stop is at St James Retail Park. Anyone coming up the A1 will need to come off at J47 (signed Harrogate) and find your way to the retail park.

Rendezvous #2 10:15-10:30 - St James Retail Park, HG5 8PZ Google Map:

... again, this is an approximate location for the postcode. The retail park is on Grimbald Crag Way.

From there, to our destination thus ... Onto A1 again and off at J49 A168/A19 for Teeside, Take A172 to Stokesley/Great Ayton. Left turning for this not well signed and just round a bend. However helpfully 200 yards before turning a farmer has a silage tanker in a field right next to the A19 with SLOW DOWN TRACTORS written on it in letters about 2 feet high!

At Stokesley (Fliptop ... let me or Bonzo know if you want to meet up here, say around 11:00-11:10?) take A173 for Great Ayton then towards Guisborough.

At roundabout outside Guisborough take A171 moor road signed Whitby, just around Scaling Dam (on the right) is a white road left turn to Grinkle, along it to Easington where we join the A173 coast road to Whitby. Past Boulby Mine and Staithes to Hinderwell, where we take a left turn for Runswick.

Destination: 11.45-12:00 in the bay car park People from North Yorkshire, Tyne & Wearside, or further afield can meet up here.

We can have a nose at SAABs, stroll on the beach, stretch legs, etc and then get on into Whitby for a late lunch ... fish'n'chips, bucket o'whelks, whatever floats your boat.

Here's some photographs of the day ... Add your own captions as you go :)

Al - We'll expect you next year, eh? Dervman, also? Look like this is going to be an annual event now, for some time at the end of May, early June.
