in cold weather here in new england i thought i had frozen fuel lines so i used a generic form of gas line antifreeze/injector cleaner (found out the battery went bad and replaced it) but this cheap stuff caused the ses light to come on i think, also there was lotsa salt on the roads here really messy too. would like too know how to reset the ses light too see if it comes back again switching fuel brands did nothing and fuel cap seems ok .... thxs
You need a OBDII Scan Tool. They run around $80.00 retail.
If there is an Autozone nearby, take the car there. They can tell you what codes (faults) are actully causing the SES light to come on. Other parts stores or garages will also diagnose the codes for you.
Makin gthe light go away is not going to eliminate the original cause of the problem.
I have the same car. I pull the 10amp fuse marked controls B+ (just inboard of the oil reset button) in the under hood fuse box. Leave the fuse out for about 10 seconds and it resets all the codes. If the code comes back again, I borrow a code reader and check it out.
Interesting that this happened to you. Same thing happened to me last summer following adding some injector cleaner. I had the codes read out and got a P0495 (large leak in the evap canister). I traced it down to a defective canister purge solenoid. Replacement part was only about $20 from Saturn. Took me longer to find the location of the solenoid than to replace it. They hide it behind the fuel filler tube...
Without a code reader, most diagnostics are a huge guess at best.
