D(r)um Brake Question

I imagine this will be a no brainer for many, but I wanted to throw it out there.

Could somebody please list probable causes for squeaking in my rear brakes? Here's the situation: Only 40k miles, and the brakes only squeak the first couple of times I depress the pedal. In other words, after pulling out of my driveway and heating them up a little, everything seems normal. If it were dust, wouldn't the sound be continuous?

Thanks

You didnt say what model you have or any info, next time that would be helpful. Anyways, that is quite common for drum brakes, especially in damp climates like the southern US. There is a treatment called "stop Squeak" which will make the squeak go away. The noise wont harm anything, although its annoying. I also have it in my SC2. You can get the stop squeak at any auto parts store and do it yourself or let your shop do the job.

I know it is usual to include info about my model, but it was really just a general question about drum brakes.

Thanks for the response nonetheless, I know my question is asinine compared to the usual problems seen here.

Now that it's wet, all three of my cars (including a Saturn) will squeek just a little bit for the first few brakings if they haven't been driven for a few days. As is natural to brakes, a small layer of rust builds up on them as they sit, which gets rubbed off soon. Depending on your climatic conditions and driving pattern, that may or may not be your problem. : )
