4 speed hawk starter

Howdy Y'all, I have the 1961 Hawk (4 speed model) that I graduated high school with, It has not been tagged since 1971 when I left for Viet Nam. I am now trying to get same on the road again. I has been in my Dads shop inside in West Texas since 1971. He went to South Bend and bought a "new" long block in the early 70's..now the problem I have 3 starters, one of them I pulled off of a engine that came out of our 59 Hawk w/auto trans..I can't get any of these starters to pull up on the bell housing. I measured the hole that is in the automatic bell housing and it is deeper than on the 4 speed bell housing..Dad swears that these 3 starters are the only ones we had..all the same...is there a spacer (maybe 3/8" or 1/4") that goes between the starter and Bell housing or what?? also I have a ton of parts that we stripped off of the 59 if ya know a body in need.. Thanks in advance for any help or direction...Jack

Jack,

the starter is the same automatic and stickshift but the nose is different. (yes, I know they have different tag numbers, but there is no difference except for the nose.) There is no spacer, you need to swap a stickshift nose on one of your starters. If you can't locate one I bought one for my car (which I converted to a 4-speed from a Flightomatic) from Tom Karkiewicz (sp?) the "bus guy" that comes to all the big swap meets. I think he charged me something on the order of $20.

I'm still looking for a driver's door window with tinted glass for my '55 coupe, so if you have one in your stash drop me an email. (any C-body 53-61 with tinted glass would have the window I need.) Also if you have any C-body vent windows with stainless steel frames that you would be willing to let go of, I might be interested. I have some "decent" chrome ones but stainless is forever or so I've heard.

thanks and good luck,

nate

You will need to find a starter for manual transmission equipped V8, as the automatic one has a shorter snout and will not work. I don't recall that the 4 spd. had a special starter? Anyone?

Nate,

Is the snout longer on the stick shift, or auto? I get those mixed up until I see one, then after awhile I get it mixed up again. Vicious cycle.
