Breakerless ignition?

Well, the Champ has been running poorly. There were several possibilites, but most have been eliminated. It comes down to the distributor. New points etc have not cured the miss at steady speeds. Doesn't miss upon acceleration or deceleration, but at steady speed around 55 mph. It was doing this at about 45, but with new points, timing and distributor work it now happens primarily at a steady

55mph. The fellow who is helping me with this process says the distubtor is worn and that maybe a replacement is needed. This is not a stock truck so I do not feel the need to keep it original. I would like to put breakerless ignition on it. The engine is an R1 with an Edlebrock carb. What is the process to convert to a breakerless ignition system?

Easiest way is to ditch the PrestoJunk distributor and get an early GM/Delco and install a Pertronix...

Joe, Since you probably should replace the distributor anyhow, I'd go with the MoPar distributor that Dave T sells. I have experience with three different systems. I went with a Pertronix on a Delco window and it helped a lot on the '64 R-2 Avanti (it had already been changed from the dual-point Prestolite). Then I changed my worn out Prestolite in my '64 Wagonaire (same symptoms as your Champ) with the MoPar system. Then, the '64 Daytona convertible I bought turned out to have the Crane system. It's probably comparable to the Pertronix. The MoPar works even better than the Pertronix or Crane- quick, easy starts anytime. Also, MoPar ignition parts are easy to find if you do have a pick-up failure (happens at about 100,000 miles). The Pertronix isn't too hard to install- can be done in the car, but it's better to pull it. I don't know about the Crane, but I'd think it's comparable. The MoPar involves switching out the entire distributor and being careful with the wiring instructions (don't want a resistor wire from the ignition switch to the coil). I had trouble getting the MoPar to drop in. I finally oiled the drive gear and it slipped right in (90 degrees from where I wanted it, but I wasn't about to pull it again so I just moved the wires around). Paul Johnson

I think Dave is not selling too many of the MoPar setups now that he's got the complete new Mallory-based unit. I am using one of the MoPar ones as well and love it, but the Mallory unit looks a lot sexier (and should work just as well if not better.)

I'm half tempted to sell the MoPar unit and get the Mallory just to stick with the "shiny stuff" theme I have going, but it works so well it's hard to make a case for messing with success.

On Monday, my '83 Honda Civic refused to start and as some of you know, this has been an ongoing project that hit the road in May and the car had been running quite well.

Squirted some starter fluid in the air cleaner - No Response.

Changed out the distributor - No Response

Changed out the coil - No Response

Decided to go into town with the truck.

Got back home and pulled the plugs which were all wet. Cleaned 'em and put 'em back in and the car barely started acting as it was flooded. Once warm, it would restart without a problem.

Tuesday morning, no start again. Pulled the plugs, recleaned 'em and it started under protest but I did a couple of errands.

Wednesday morning was a repeat of Tuesday.

Thursday morning, pulled the plugs before attempting a start. They were not wet but were sooty. Cleaned 'em and the car again started under protest. Went to lunch and ran a few errands.

Did not attempt a start on Friday morning but later after thinking about it, I decided to swap out the brandy new coil wire and replace it with the old dusty original 23 year old Honda wire and the damned thing fired up with a vengeance.

Goes to show that just because it's new doesn't mean it's good...
