Ford re-issuing Shelby GT500 Mustang for 2007 (ot)

re: Shelby 500......yes, very impressive....500 SUPERCHARGED horsepower. but I've heard there have been some reilability issues on early production units. too much for me: took delivery of a regular GT 'Stang in February and 300 horsepower is enough to scare me..and the steering is probably too quick for an ol' fart like me.

FYI: on my 'Stang......needing a new car and having one front-driver, my primary requirement was rear-wheel drive. that limited the selection. figured I wasn't quite old enuff for a Marquis.....then started checking the 'Stang specs: 108" wheelbase, 187' overall length, 280 ci V8......wow, sounded about as close to Avanti specs as you can get today. (well, after all, that's what the new ones are made from).

but: gees.......until you get in a new 'Stang, you have no idea how big and roomy Avanti's are! No way an adult could get in the back seat. Front seat much more crowded than an ol' Avanti.....and Avantis even have real trunks.

the thing that really surprised me: each 'Stang is individually weighed at the factory and the weight is on the window sticker. with an all-Aluminium engine, trans case, etc., etc the damn thing weighs 3875 pounds! where is it? everything is flimsy...no frame....all plastic. jees.

one thing I like: for all the power, it gets 19 mpg in town and 23 on the highway (so far). one thing I don't like: the tranny (automatic) is made in France.

re FERDS.....hope my '06 is as good as my '85 was.......bought new.....put 88,000 miles on it. routine and preventative maintenance. but NOTHING ever went wrong with it - not one repair other than plugs, brake pads, etc. and it didn't even rust (had it 8 years).

btw, the '85 was $7995 with about every option you could get. the '06 was $34,400.......just took the 500 watt stereo....didn't feel like paying $1200 more for the woofers in the trunk. but you'd think for that kind of money you could get a light in the glove compartment or a cigarette lighter!

cars. I've got an '04 Mach 1, 5 spd., 3.73 rear end. And does it move! Fastest thing I've driven since my '63 R2 Avanti, and that one had an auto.

At my elbow sits a video tape of one of the mid-1990s BBC Top Gear shows in which the Avanti was featured and the presenter made a case for it being the first "pony car."

(Note: This BBC top Gear bears no relationship to the crap that the "Beeb" is making under the same name nowadays.)

(Note #2 - I forgot to being the tape to Palm Springs for the AOAI IM!)

When I showed my 64 R2 Avanti off at work after I bought it, some one asked me " What is an Avanti? ". I told him it was what the Mustangs and Camero's grew up to be.
