Off topic 2006 Mustang Question

My wife has recently purchased a 2006 Mustang with 4 ltr. engine V6, and 5 speed tranny. When driving from point A to B, I have the tendency not to use all the forward gears. I just think that it is unnecessary. She is convinced that I am causing undue abuse to the drive train. Any body want to settle this disagreement for us. She has talked with other folks that have told her that they don't recommend or have never heard of not using all the gears in succession. Please someone chime in on this. thanks jimmijim

You'd probably just increase the rate of clutch wear a fractional amount. The engine would be running further out of it's normal torque bad a bit. Probably won't hurt a thing as long as you don't lug the engine hard (with a big load) for a long time. Jeff (Are you superstitious about the even numbers on the trans? ) Rice

OK..... Here goes...

Honey, it won't hurt a thing.

Hey Jeff, If she reads your post about clutch wear then I am a duster.

Won't hurt a thing, Jim, as long as you don't lug the engine. I run Debbie's little Ford in the 1-3-5 combo all the time and SuperDually loves 2-3-5 and 2-4-5 if it is not loaded heavily.

Yep, it depends on whether the gears are close or wide ratio. IIRC, I always went by third in my old Avanti...

How many truckers do you know who go through all fo the gears (13 or 15 speed) when they don't have a load? Most will start out in a much higher gear and 'skip-shift' up. I do it all the time too in my F*rd 5 speed, Suzuki 4X4 5 speed and used to in my 4 speed Austin Mini, 1-3-4, 1-2-4 depending on the road and the load.
