(ot) Cell Phone and Cell Phone Company Question (ot)

Cingular has 3G. It is the equilant of broad band. I have their 3G card in my laptop and is etremely fast. The Treo 680 is NOT 3G, but their Blackberry is. How did we go anywhere without these things? A "pay phone" was a given.

cingular service sucks in rural areas around here, Alltel was the best for communications, I shopped for function vs. price after moving here from "big city"

We don't have a Treo 680, but are looking at getting one since we got a special offer for one that includes some medical software that my wife uses. AFAIR the 680 has some essential requirements - it is unlocked and has four channel/frequency capability.

Jeff, I have used Verizon for years. I find that its coverage is better than many of the services other folks I know have. We use the cheapest of their phones and get great service. Even when i went out to the Salt Flats in 2003, I was one of the few folks in our group who could get a signal while out on the salt, miles from anywhere. Now there are places that simply don't have the towers and thus no service from anyone. I would not even consider switching away from Verizon at the present time.

That said I don't do anything fancy with my service. I don't text, do pictures or the like. But for basics I don't think you can beat Verizon, at least around here.

What is the cost per month for your 3G service? Are you using this only or do you have another service for the house? Would it be costly to use it all the time at the house and on the road?

$29.95 a month for the 3G. Yes it would be cheaper to use, but we also get internet via cable. We are stuck with the contract. Neat thing is when cable goes down, which is often the 3G card kicks in.

Jeff; I had a Treo 650 for the past two years and upgraded to the 700P last month. I have unlimited text messaging and internet service. Internet service is pretty fast and helpful when out on the road either for Mapquest, traffic cameras or Google searches. Texting has really caught on with many people - it's not unusal to have 2-300 text message a month. It's also pretty handy to snap a picture and IM it to someone. I don't know where I'd be without this phone. I use it constantly for contact info, scheduling, alarms, etc. I have had Verizon service for 8 years. Many of my family, friends and co- workers have Verizon which means calls to them are free. Heck, I have a 2 gig SD card in the phone filled with music that I can plug into my car radio. The cover I have holds another SD card that is a Dictionary/Thesaurus. When I have to wait somewhere, I can always play Solitaire or Bejeweled.

Good luck, Rich

The big problem with Verizon is that it does not AFAIK use the GSM system anywhere, unlike T-Mobile and Cingular. The big advantage with the GSM system is that you can get an unlocked phone and simply pick up SIM cards as needed. The four band version will nicely cover the US and Europe. You can pick up cheap SIM cards in most any (European) country. This is the one real advantage of a cell phone (other than for emergency use) that I see, i.e. being able to call back cheaply to the States to check on how the pets are doing while you are on vacation in Europe.
