OT: 'nother pickup question

what's the group's opinion of a Ford 390 w/4-speed? Going to look at another cheap truck this PM and hoping it's more what I'm looking for than the last one - this one is a '79 F-250 2WD, so it sounds a little better for towing than the last one...

For some reason, all I can find for sale for cheap is a bunch of @#$%^%$ Fords... not a Chevy or Dodge to be found.

Ebay item 270099214263 is tempting, but I have a feeling it's going to go out of my price range... would love to have it though for sentimental reasons, it is the exact twin of my great-grandfather's old truck (which was in almost as nice shape when he quit driving; my grandfather kept it for a few years and then sold it because he already had a Chevy that got better gas mileage...) except his had a black interior instead of off-white. Just thought I'd post that though because it does kind of make me drool.

Dang good tough reliable engine. If the 4 speed is a top loader, even you might have a hard time breaking it .. Jeff

Just a note to let you know I've hauled a trailer with a Studebaker loaded more then once with my 300 cu.in six without a issue.

Me too JP. My Dad had a '77 Ford 1/2ton with the 300cid six. I pulled a '62 Lark 2dr from Ft Stewart GA to home in Indiana. This included going up(and down) I-24's Mont Eagle Tn.

Well I done my research... apparently a '79 never *had* the 390 in it and the guy has never inspected it (running it with historic plates) so that is off the list. Drove a Chevy this PM that I liked but too rusty. I have one more possibility - a '72 Ford with 302/3-speed that looks awesome in the pics, waiting on the owner to call me, if that doesn't pan out I will probably be making an offer on the first truck I looked at (twin of JP's but white, extended cab, automatic.)

If you keep remaining so friggin' indicisive and flakey on issues you will eventually be developing a vagina.

You don't have a Fast Eddie's type corner car lot that stocks nothing but pickups? If not you need to make a trip south... I pass three on my 11 mile commute to work everday.

I live near DC... that means no. been watching both FleaBay and Craig's List and am coming up real dry in the "cheap, rust free and running" department. I must be picky because apparently my conditions of being able to pass inspection and drive it home are ruling out most of what I find. Oddly enough I haven't seen a single Toyota or Nissan for sale... only Fords and the occasional Chevy. I guess the imports get snapped up real quick for work trucks.

The 302 won't be a good candidate for towing...
