I need correct paint info for my 1966 cruiser. Color is gold, Firewall numbers V-9Y and 4376 is on a separate tag. Car serial No. C 532II6. I need help interpreting what these numbers mean. Any help is appreciated. Dick Z.
For Canadian production it shows the following....
V = 283 V8 engine
9Y = 4-door Cruiser Body
4376 = a sequential number for inventory of the V-Y9 bodies as they were built
I cannot find my '66 book right now but the C532116 is the serial number. All Canadian production cars had the "C" prefix. I do not remember the beginning and ending serial numbers for '66 but, I would guess, it was C530001 and it would make your car the 2116th car built in the Hamilton plant in '66. If anyone has a '66 parts or service book, please verify this.
V-9Y simply means an 8 cylinder Y body (long wheelbase sedan). 9 is the trim level, I think. In the serial number, C means Canada, and the rest is just a sequence number. You can contact the Studebaker National Museum, and for a fee of $45, IIRC, you can get a copy of the vehicle build order, if you give them the serial number. There is no paint code in the body tag or serial number. There might be a paint code label glued to the bottom of the glove compartment, if it hasn't fallen off (in which case it MIGHT be sitting on the dash brace beneath the glove box).
If you are going to have the car repainted, I think your best option is to go to the paint shop that you plan to have do the job, and ask them which paint system they recommend, and then use the paint suppliers' computer matching system to blend a paint based on scanning an un-weathered sample of paint from your own car. That should get you so close that nobody can claim your paint is "wrong."
That sounds like Yellowknife Gold Metallic. Studebaker code P-6483. Dupont no. DUM-2098 or 8110LH. If you call the Dupont hotline 1-800-338-7668 they might be able to give you a current code or match for this paint.
