possible clutch problem?

Any guesses what this problem could be? Have all stock clutch in my '55 except for Fidanza aluminum flywheel. With clutch pedal flat to the floor, there's a ticking noise that sounds exactly like a loose valve. With the clutch about 1" off the floor, no noise. With the clutch off the floor only far enough to stop the noise I can still shift into and out of reverse without grinding. Any ideas what the noise could be? Would it be acceptable to lengthen the linkage, even if it means that clutch free play would be greater than spec? Currently the linkage is all the way shortened to minimize free play (there still is some, however.)

Just a guess, but I think throw out bearing. I was in the process of putting a brand new one in the 62 4 speed Hawk I had when a friend of mine suggested checking how well the bearing spun. Sure enough when I tried it, there were a couple of spots it stuck and did not spin freely. Got another new throw out that spun freely and put it in and no noise. You would think that the new bearing would be ok, but Roger had guessed correctly that some of the lube in the bearing may have gotten old just sitting there.

Like I say, just a guess.

Nothing wrong with the way a Champ handles, you just don't want to parallel park if you can help it!
