Steering box dilemna revisited

The year, 1977. Problem was a leaking P.S.. set up in my 60 Lark V8. Ross gear. Removed or disconnected all power components and installed a manual steering reach rod. Suspension components were great condition and well maintained. No more leaks and a bear to steer especially when parking. 1980 installed 1964 Saginaw box plus column and wheel from a 64 Cruiser. Less turns lock to lock and steering effort a bit reduced but like a younger bear to park. 1982, added non leaking power components to system. What a difference and what a difference. Effortless almost to steer. Manual boxex suffer much abuse because they are the last component in line to absorb road suspension shock besides your hands.. No hydraulic cyllinder to absorb it. In a manual steering car the steering wheel is subjected to a lot of stress when manuevering. Thussly they suffer from stress cracks and old age cracks both.. Avantis without power steering likewise.
