Have you notified ALL the parts vendors? The SDC? The AOAI? Hemmings? AACA? (I am sure you have, but it is a question that needs asking) Jeff

Wish there was a way to do this with cars but on my notebooks I set all the passwords. That way if someone steals one not only won't they be able to get into any of my files but the machine will be absolutely useless, they won't even be able to reuse the hard drive or planar.

Actually they could still read your files on the HDD all they have to do is put it in an external case and read it from another computer through a USB port. I've done this several times myself on old computers where the OS has become corrupt. Then I reformat the old HDD and use it for backup storage just in case one goes that I really can't get back.

Nate,

It's not that easy with some laptop drives these days. If it's an IBM laptop with the security chip activated not only is the system locked without the right password but if the original hard drive is replaced with a new one the password is written to the drive from the motherboard... and if the removed hard drive is put in another computer the password is written to that MB. It's like a virus.
