Studebaker logos on Metal

I have been playing around with my inkjets making logos and oher stuff so I thought that I might do my mailbox. I printed out some Authorized Service Medalions and went to the model shop and got me some fireproof dope and dope the logos in place. Three coats later I installed my mailbox. The logos lasted for about two weeks....untill a big rainstorm. Water somehow got behind the dope and soaked up the velum that I printe dthe logos on. Back to the drawing board except this time I was doing my neighbors mailbox and shew wanted cats.

This time I doped the cats on two coats and top sealed the cats with four coats of clear enamel. Well her maibox has made it through two rainstorms and still is sealed so I guess I have figured out how to do the appliques. Too late for my mail box as I order two of Authorized Service Decals while I was playing with the neighbors mail box. Looks like if I hadnt been in such a hurry I could have save myself a few bucks after all.

So now the mailbox looks great and I have my business logos done and my elevator is done in the shop but my allergies are killing me so I am still two weeks behind getting the loft done.

Living in town is such a pain.......they expect you to stop making noise at 10:00 PM.....heck by then I am just getting started inside........

What Inkjet printer are you using and which inks? If you can use Epsons Durabrite or Durabrite K3 they are water proof, and have a supposed 80 yr and 200 year life span to UV exposure. Since you got down to a proven method, also coat them with Krylon UV protector, as the Epson statement about life of image is based on either behind UV protected glass or in a album.

Bill,

That 80 years is for indoor lighting with UV protection over the print along with using the Durabrite Inks and proper UV resisited paper provide by Epson and some other manufacturers. . .out doors is a whole different issue. Max life using the same inks on 3M proven UV outdoor products with a 3M UV overlam is 5-8 years max here in Florida. Maybe a little more in your part of the world.

The HP's solvent base inks will go a little longer as well as other manufactures using the solvent base inks but then the printers cost allot more. But then you can print on to untreated materials. And you can increase life using a uv protect over the top of the image again.

I have a graphic on a side of a Pontoon Boat here in florida for over 8 years using a slightly different method using a HP printer using the UV Inks and it has faded yet. But it is getting to that point that it will start to fade fast.

First off fire proof dope is used when making flying model airplanes. You use it to seal the paper or cloth that you wrap the wings and fuselage with.

As for printers I have several.....A Cannon 2550 and and a HP 1210 are the ones that I use for graphics. As for photos I can send of the neighbors mailbox that I did that worked. Mine which I did first got soaked and ran even with perminant solvent based ink. I guess I can still get a shot of how my mail box turned out. I could even put in some logos. but the main point that I was trying to make is that you do not hace to purchase the decals from vendors and make them work. You can find the image you want and size it to your needs and by using the dope and then clearcoating it in place it will be water proof.

I used drafting velum for the paper for the mail box so that I could get maximum penitration by the sealers. For advertising in my vehicles I an just using a good typing paper and clear coating. I will try and find the specific inks meantioned but since I refil my own tanks I might have a problem finding refils....

So, where do I get this "Dope", is it something I have to buy from a specialty store? I've made lots of decals for things but they never last, so I'm glad this came up. I usually use avary clear or white sticker paper. I've got the Kryon I can add over or do I need that because I can just clear coat? You just use reg Velum paper? Sounds even cheaper.
