Voltage regulator

Can anyone cross an Autolite number? I need to replace a VRP6001A.

1951 Champion. Local guys can't do anything with that number. Studebaker George

Champion is a six... I had crossed it (thanks Dwain!) to a Carquest VR2 or 4; only difference between the two is the post location....so they say... BUT...I have gotten TWO of them and they don't work at all. Was thinking that they were wrong... Finally scrounged around in the boneyard and got an old nasty rusty looking ORIGINAL AUTOLITE and that thing works perfectly. the Carquest brand is a Standard, so one would think it would be of good quality. the generator on this car had a twelve volt field coil in it when it came in and the regulator was cooked. Put the correct field in it and a new regulator and nothing. ANOTHER regulator and nothing. Ground the field and she charges like a banshee. Like I said, the one I dragged up out of the boneyard works flawlessly but I don't trust it in the long run. Another one is on it's way... Similar thing happened to me on brake drums recently, I kept pulling drums to find good ones and took a pile to my friend's brake shop...almost left out two VERY RUSTY and NASTY looking ones but took them anyway. They were almost dead on new spec and cut at 20 thou. The drums were for a "conversion" on the same car, shit canned the original brakes and put late V8 brakes all around...what a difference! My experience with "Standard" brand parts has been dismal. I've had no less than three regulators that didn't work out of the box or failed shortly after including a fancy shmancy "Blue Streak" regulator for my old '63 Lark.

Their brake switchs have all failed within twelve months. And don't even get me started on points etc. I now avoid that brand with a passion.

I rather pay a few more bux on something reliable.

Yeah, Woody's car. The brakes were all leaking and the car never did stop worth a crap even when they were working, so now maybe he will feel better about driving it more than the couple blocks to work every day. The big brakes were probably a little overkill for this car (Champion automatic) but it sure does stop nice now! Studebaker George

Yes. Third regulator worked fine although I did turn up the voltage and current on it as it was set low from the factory. Studebaker George
