2000 Forester GT power steering issues

Hi,

I just recently bought a 2000 Forester GT, and think it is a fabulous car. Unfortunately I am having a slight problem with the power steering.

When pulling in to a tight carspace, or trying a tight turn, the power steering appears to cut out, the steering wheel gets quite heavy and is very difficult to steer.

I mentioned this to my local dealer, and he said that it was a "blow-off" valve, which was saving my power steering from being damaged when put under stress. Seemed like a plausable explanation, but I never had this problem on my 98 Forester.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Just curious and no offence, but why would you go from a 98 to a 2000?

I wanted more power, and the GT that was at my local dealers was a

2000 model...

The car had a service just before I picked it up, so I would expect that the power steering fluid would be fine. I tried to get them to check the power steering belt, but they fobbed me off with the "blow off valve" excuse.
