6 cylinder growl

Have a 2004 3.0 Outback. When the vehicle is cold and in gear (auto trans) and stationary, I get a low piched growl which comes up through the floorboards. The vibration goes away once the car is warm or is taken out of gear. Is this normal? There are no other symptoms. Car has only 10K miles on it.

I have a 2001 Legacy with the SOHC 2.5L flat-four and have noticed the same thing. I noticed it when I first started driving the car, which was at about 25,000 miles. It now has about 45,000 miles on it and the sound hasn't changed. Personally, I think it's just because when the engine is cold it idles faster than when warm and therefore strains against the transmission more when the trans is in gear and the brakes are on. I could be wrong though.

Sorry Mike I don't live there but was in the area earlier this yr. Spent a week in the LA basin drove about 500 miles while there, mostly freeway and I only saw 3 Subies in that time. At home I see that many every day driving down town in the small community I live in.

I had some cooling system problems while there and took a clue from the lack of seeing Subaru's and knew if a shop didn't know about purging air from the cooling system I would be asking for problems. Did most of the work myself but took the radiator in to a shop for repair. Shop told me they had never worked on a Subaru.

Good luck on your search.

Subie Specialties in Monrovia was recommended by several people. They are maintaining my 97OBW. No complaints.

For some reason I can't find their web site anymore, but they are at

804 E Huntington Dr # C Monrovia, CA 91016 (626) 358-4235

I had a wierd, long-running problem on my '98 Outbook Sport fixed there last year. They're good, professional people -- recommended.
