Backup lights and clutch replacement

Hi -

I've posted about this a couple of weeks ago, I'd appreciate some more help. This is a 2000 Outback, manual transmission. We had the clutch replaced and it looks like since then the back up lights are not working. I've called the dealer and they immediately said that there cannot possibly be any connection between clutch replacement and backup lights and if I scheduled an appointment they'd be "happy to take a look at it".

Could someone in the know confirm here that what they are claiming is true? It just seems like too much of a coincidence to me, and before I start arguing with the dealer, I'd like to have my facts straight. If it _is_ unrelated, then I'm not going to take it to the dealer, I'll probably try to fix it myself or have a local mechanic deal with it.

Thanks very much for any info!

D.

My Haynes manual for the 1990 thru 1998 Legacy models says that the back-up-light switch is mounted on the left side of the transfer case. (I have an '96 autmatic so have only the manual to go on.) If that is the case, the mechanic would have most likely disconnected the switch durning replacement of the clutch; so there definitely could be a connection.

Does anyone have a manual for 2000 Outback (manual tr.)? Does the back-up-lights switch still exist on the left side of the case?
