Hello all, i have just purchased a 1982 brumby ute. It appears to be in fairly good order given its age. The first job is to fix the gearshift linkages, it changes ok, but is a bit like stirring thick porridge. Does anyone have any clues as how to replace whatever bushes etc are required? Thanks, this is probably the first of many questions! Tim
What's a Brumby Ute? I'm assuming it's some kind of Subaru, otherwise you wouldn't be posting here. IIRC, in '82, there were only a couple tranny choices, at least in the US; FWD 5spd, 4WD 4spd Hi/Lo, and (I think) 4WD 4spd Hi only. Not really too much in the way of external linkage on any of these, just a connecting rod between the shifter and the selector shaft. The first thing I'd do is change the fluid, run it a bit, and change it again. If that doesn't help, I'd suggest simply swapping in a junkyard gear box; probably cheaper and quicker in the long run. That said, I think you can pull out the shifter shaft without splitting the tranny cases; there will be several detent balls and springs that must be removed, probably covered with threaded caps. I wouldn't even attempt it 1)without at least a Chiltons, or preferably a factory manual, and 2)without the resignation that "It's broken anyway; can't make it any worse."
Good luck! ByeBye! S. .
