Drive belt replacement

I have a 2000 Legacy with 123,000 Kilometers. My service person, not a Subaru dealer, has recommended the drive belt be replaced because the car the is 7 years old - even though the distance is below the recommended 160K.

What is the experience of this group with drive belts on the MY2000 Legacy. Is time a factor as well as distance.

Thanks,

Harvey

I know on heavy truck tires, even if the tread is perfect, 7 years is about the maximum age for usage. The rubber breaks down and can cause a failure. If you have a good mechanic, he should probably be adopted into the family. I think he is giving you good advice. You've gotten

75% of the mileage out of the belt already. If you break the belt when you're away from home, the motel, restaurants, repairs, lost time from work, whatever - I think it's cheap insurance.
