Forester Remote Entry Question

x-no-archive: yes

Question: 99 Forester "L" w/power door locks. Does not have remote entry (no black box under dash). Does anyone have experience installing the factory remote entry system on one of these vehicles? Does Subaru offer a "kit" to do this? Is this a "plug and pray" adventure? Does it involve modifications to the vehicle's wiring?

TIA!

I installed one in my Legacy and it was fairly easy (preferred paying a bit more for the factory stuff to protect warranty...). You can get the kit from a friendly dealer's parts department (what I did, friendly because the first one I asked did not want to care about the request... :( ) or online:

or

(no relationship, never bought from them...). Installation was straightforward on my car, I just followed the instructions I found here:

. Good luck.

The 99 Forester came with the Code-Alarm box IIRC.

If you have the wiring harness (the factory wiring has a programming/reset button and two fuses) it's not a problem.

I had all this on my 98 GT Wagon, but missed out on an ebay offering and didn't want to pay all that much for the OEM box.

I bought an aftermarket remote/alarm/starter for little more than the list price of a Subaru Remote key. The starter of course is a useless gag but hey it's there...

Installation isn't that difficult with proper instructions.

Our 99 Forester L came with remote entry--but not the alarm system--standard. Was yours bought used, or is it not a US car? Maybe somebody cannibalized the black box to install the remote in another car. If so, then the wiring and connectors might all be in place. You might try checking in a junkyard.
