How to Remove Radio deck in new Forester

How do you remove the radio/CD deck in a 2003 Forester? I've managed to remove the side panels from either side of the centre console, but it seems as if the cup holder unit obstructs access to the radio side bolts.

Good link. Thanks!

However, the illustration there is for the AT Forester. The console panels on the manual transmission Forester work a bit differently. Fewer screws.

Grab at the rear of the shift lever boot and pull up and back to remove the first section of the console. That exposes the two screws at the bottom of the panel that covers the radio. The rest of the panel is held in by plastic clips. Remove the screws and then pull gently, perhaps using a thin screwdriver around the edges. I usually break at least one of this sort of clip, but these turned out to be pretty sturdy.

Unfortunately I'm after detail for the later model Forester. It is completely different from the one illustrated here.

What country are you in? There could be differences. The instructions that I posted immediately below are for the US 2003 Forester XS with manual transmission. The link to

Wabby's link shows an older Forester. Mine is the newer model. The only country difference evident should perhaps be the fact that mine is RH drive, further there is no diference. In fact, I'm sure the consoles on LHD and RHD models are the same.

The issue is the model, not the auto or manual transmission or country.
