Michelin Hydra Edge for Outback Wagon? Suggestions?

I am trying to make a decision by tomorrow on a set of 4 replacement tire for my 2000 Outback. I was due to replace the original Wilderness tires in October and a road hazard on the highway punctured a sidewall today so I need to do the replacement tomorrow.

I live in Connecticut and need an all season tire that is good in the snow and hopefully will not hydra-plane on wet highways as much as the Wilderness tires did.

Any suggestions by owners? I have read good and bad things about the Michelin Hydra Edge, MXV4 Plus, Pilot, and the Bridgestone Potenza RE950. A local salesmen was telling me that the Toyo Proxes TPT were better than the Michelin MXV4 Plus.

I thought I was going to have more time to make a decision.

I had the Michelin MX4 (not the V plus, though the tread design is similar) on my 99 Camry. The Michelins were terrible in the snow, and not real great on damp roads (low traction).

Hello Andy

Had Michelin XOne on my previous car and they were fantastic in the rain, very comfortable, handled well and wore very well (about half gone after ~50000km). Great tires for summer, never tried them in winter up here in Canada.

Thanks to everyone that answered. I looked at Consumer Reports and they gave the MXV4 Plus very high ratings, including stopping on ice and hydra-planing. I have seen mixed comments on this tire, maybe because there were a few versions and they have been improving on the original MX4V model.

I ended up getting this tire because all the tires in this category had compromises, but this tire seemed the best bet. The Potenza 950 looked good except for the terrible snow performance.

I looked at the Hydra and although it looked like a good water tread design, I couldn't imagine it being a great snow tread. It also is not an H rated tire, I think it was a T.

Time will tell.

The last 2 years the original Wilderness tires were terrible at stopping in the snow, unless it was extremely dry snow. I am hoping these tires are better than the Wilderness at stopping, and I am talking about stopping gradually from a speed of 15 or 20 mph.
