Power sunroof Question

My son has a '98 Legacy GT. The power sunroof opens fine, but when it is closing, it gets about 1/2 way and then seems to get a little crooked and stops closing. The dealer says it's an expensive fix. Does anyone have any suggestions?

DC, This method worked on my 95 when the roof had trouble closing: Clean the tracks that the sunroof runs along well with some WD40 or similar oil/lube. Open and close a few times while reapplying to the tracks. Don't just spray the tracks, wipe them down well to get all the gunk off. Once all the gunk is gone spray a final time for lubrication If you have to, as the roof is closing, help it out with your hand to keep it straight until after a few passes it closes straight on its own.

Light oils are great at cleaning old grease away. Which will help. But you cant rely on the wd40, or whatever, for lubrication alone. Its far too light. Follow the manuals recomendation for lubrication. Im not familiar with it, but I will take a guess and say it probably needs Lithium Grease. But dont take me at my word, I may be wrong.

I have a '97 Legacy Wagon GT and my sunroof stops at halfway when closing. I release the switch and apply pressure again and it closes fine. I figured it was just one of those silly options.

More importantly, WD40 is a solvent, not a lubricant.

This is functioning as designed according to my manual (2003 Baja). Why they made it a two-step process I have no idea.

According to info from my Subaru dealer, the reason for the way the sun roof closes in two stages is....it is a safety feature assuring no ones hands are accidentally closed in the roof .
