Radiator Replacement

Dang, I miss you guys! Lost newsgroup access a while back, posting through google so I apologize in advance for any posting weirdness.

Anyway, my good old 99 Outback has a bad radiator, it's coming apart. I went to order a new one from a local parts place and the answer was $110 with a sensor fitting and $193 w/o a sensor fitting.

What does this mean? I poked around before coming here and apparently there's a fan thermo sensor on the radiator.

Is there a web-based support group somewhere? I recall one mentioned here years ago, but can't find it.

Thanks!!!

All a sensor is is a plug with a thermister in it. When it reaches a certain temp, the thermister closes and current flows, turning the fan on (er, I think. My experience is mostly with Toyotas, and Subarus have always been a bit "weird"... ;) )

At any rate, you should be able to get the rad with the sensor fitt

Being a 99, I'd expect that sensor to communicate with the ECU so, if your present rad has it, the replacement should to.

On my Supra one of the sensors is just a plug with a 17mm bolt head.

Thanks guys, this group is just as good as ever. :-) I'll be ordering the new rad tonight.

BTW, the failure is corrosion of the folded copper 'fins.' Big chunks of it are falling out, ending up in the engine compartment and on the fans. My poor son has to drive around with the heat on, watching the temp gauge. LOL, I need to fix this for him soon.
