Rumble and knocking from underneath...

My 96 Legacy GT makes odd noises when driving over uneven pavement. There is a distinct knocking or clunking sound from underneath the chassis. It does not appear to come from the suspension components. My first suspicion is the drive shaft bushing. Any opinions?

Easiest things to fix are probably the best to check first. Look for loose exhaust clamps. Many rattles and thumps are caused by loose exhaust components.

Don't know if this is the answer but there is tech bulletin from Subaru about slack in the U shaped brackets holding the front roll bars to the frame. The bulletin described the noise as stones hitting the floor boards. The fix consisted of removing the brackets, applying anti-seize compound, bending a metal tab(from approx 75 degrees to 60 degrees) on the bracket on the end opposite the bolt hole and re-installing.

That's how it sounds exactly. Can you direct me to the tech bulletin, if available online?

Thanks
