stalling at idle

I have a 95 Legacy w/ less than 60K miles on it.  I've recently
started experiencing a problem where the car will stall when idling.
So far I've only seen it stall when the car is warmed up (by that I
mean the temp gauge is at mid-scale).  Usually, it stalls after it's
been idling for a little while (e.g. not right when I stop at a light
but maybe after 15-30 sec. or more).  So far, when the car stalls it
has always been able to be restarted immediately after (I'm pretty
sure this is important but not sure how).  It doesn't happen on every
trip.  No CEL and no codes are generated.  Also immediately prior to
seeing this stall issue, I had the coolant temp sensor (the one the
ECU uses) replaced because it was throwing codes.  The car has been
seen by two shop, neither has been able to replicate the problem.

What kinds of malfunctions would tend to cause the kind of symptoms
I'm seeing?  I've heard the idle air control valve mentioned a lot,
does that fit the profile?  What about a dud temp sensor (or dirty
contacts).  Anything else I should be looking at?  Any problems
"common" to the EJ22E?

TIA,
eric

Re: stalling at idle

Might clean the whole fuel rail - throttle body,  injectors, etc. When's the
last time you cleaned the injectors?

When's the last time I did what to the what? ;)

Since you say clean the throttle body, you're talking about doing more
than just throwing a bottle of gumout in the tank?

Thanks,
eric

* It may have been the liquor talking, but

Oh, yea. I mean taking apart the fuel rail and cleaning everything out,
including the injectors. Most garages perform this service for  a modest
charge.

As a matter of  form.... the throttle body and the fuel rail are completely
different parts,
but both may need some dismantling and internal cleaning.
I think I would start with the throttle body....

Re: stalling at idle

A 95 with less than 60K miles...

Try something simple first... let the fuel level in the tank go down
lets say 1/4 of full tank.  Go to your auto parts store and buy a can of
Seafoam, a fuel system cleaner.  Put it in your fuel tank, run the car
until almost empty.

If it does not solve the problem at once, give it a second try, fill the
car to 1/4 and repeat.

I have seen Seafoam do wonders.

Good luck,

AS

Thanks for the tip.  I neglected to mention it initially but when the
engine stalls it just quits.  No stumbling no roughness, nothing, it
just dies.  While I guess it could be (almost) anything, it doesn't
seem like a dirty fuel system type of thing.  I'll keep it in mind
though since there doesn't seem to be any downside to trying it.

I would not put that crap in a car. Go get the fuel system looked at.

Now this is getting interesting.  Do you have a problem with Sea Foam
or do you not like gas tank additives in general?  I've seen Sea Foam
mentioned elsewhere always in positive terms.  I don't have an opinion
either way but I've never had occasion to use any of that stuff (Heet,
Gumout, Sea Foam, etc).

Thanks,
eric

If you don't have an alternative (short of funds, crappy car anyway, etc.)
sure, it's an option. Sometimes those additives can totally gunk up a tank.

Re: stalling at idle

Seafoam is a mix of naphtha and other mild hydrocarbons.  They do not
affect the seals or plastic components in the fuel system, they just go
after the gas gunk left overs.  I have used it before and it works.  ASE
certified mechanics use it all over.

Seafoam can be used with a sprayer as starting fluid.

Good luck,

You go get the fuel system looked at and most likely, they will put that
crap in the fuel.  The car has too low mileage for it's age, it means
gas has been sitting there for a long time, creating gunk.

Seafoam is what, $18 bucks a can?  How much is a fuel system check up?

Good luck,

AS

Re: stalling at idle

As it turns out the problem appears to be a busted MAF.

Thanks to all.

Eric, if you mention your city, maybe someone reading here could
recommend a mechanic. If not, try posting at www.ultimatesubaru.org .
