transmission fluid check

Hello.

I'm getting hard shifting into 1st gear when the car is cold. I want to check the transmission fluid level, but I can't find any dipstick.

I have a 2003 Impreza Outback. The manual suggests it is near the air filter housing, but I can't see anything. I do see two filler caps for brake fluid. What's up with that?

Its on the passengers side below the spare wheel on mine.

Spare wheel? I have a spare wheel? I'll look again, but I'm quite sure I won't find a spare wheel, unless you mean something else. What kind of car do you have?

In my car the spare is over the engine under the hood. I might be a little behind as my car is only a 1988.

Hah! I always wondered when Subaru stopped doing that. I THINK someone said the last year was '89 ???

I was led astray by the manual. The engine compartment image that shows all the dip sticks showed a dipstick for the transmission fluid. That's what I couldn't find. But later in another part of the manual it shows a reservoir for the transmission fluid. It also stated that the fluid to be used is DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid. That's why I thought there were two brake fluid reservoirs. The one closer to the back and next to the air filter is actually the manual transmission reservoir / filler.

Seeing the DOT3 makes me suspect that the reservoir is actually for a hydraulic clutch.
