WRX info

Just looking for some info on the WRX. I have a 97 Mitsu Eclipse GS with

120,000 miles and lookng to get something new very soon. Are they good reliable cars ? Any common problems ? Any years to stay away from ? Are you happy with the perfomance ?

I sold my '96 Talon AWD last year. So, I know where you are coming from. The AWD system on the Subaru is better. The subaru feels lighter. On the WRX you have about the same amount of turbo lag as on the DSM. You get a firmer, more stable ride in the Subaru. I ended up buying the WRX STi in the end. Way more car than I will every need! I probably would have been just as well off in the WRX. But, if you drive the WRX and the STi side by side there is a huge difference in handling and power. I also drove the new EVO and when every thing was said and done I drove the STi home. The reason I settled on the STi is because the dealership was only asking $3000 more for the STi than the STD WRX. My only complaint is the road noise and stiff ride. But, that is the price of owning a "true" sports car.

DON'T take *my* word for it....READ THE REPORTS. The *REPORTS* say that the WRX and others have a SHITLOAD of problems, from quality to breakdowns....it's all in the reports. Yeah I know....they are all lying, all jealous of your "SOOBIES"...everyone has filed reports that are false because they have nothing else to do. WAKE UP!!!! Subaru's are CHEAP,Built CHEAP, are CHEAP quality and designed with a dollar sign in mind. They are throwaway cars, always will be. Subaru quality is like early "KIA" right up there with DAEWOO and chasing HYUNDAI with gusto... READ THE REPORTS...... chattering clutches noisy engines slipping transmissions poor brakes chipping paint door/hood/roof/trunk panels that dent easy instrument clusters/clocks and other shit that fails windshields cracking windows that leak and make noise A/C units that smell like shit crapped out engines with less than 100,000 miles on them the list is endless DON'T believe me...READ THE REPORTS...........SHIT cars!

What reports? You've posted no links to anything, but have ranted on and on without presenting one piece of evidence.

Again, why I should believe the words of Dr. Rastis Fafoofnik when he presents no evidence?

... and yet they're ranked 6th by Consumer Reports. What you have to keep in mind is this: In a forum such as this one only a tiny fraction of Subaru owners are represented. And these NG's tend to attract people who've had problems and are seeking resolutions. Only they and die-hard loyalists [and techno-nerds like myself who substitute NG's for actual human contact :-) ] will ever show up here. The vast majority of Subaru owners -- who never have a serious problem and are perfectly happy with their cars -- will never be represented here.

And I'm inclined to think that the accusations about American-made Subarus being less reliable than those made elsewhere can be similarly attributed to disproportionate representation. Like it or not, the US is the world leader in Internet participation. When 75% of NG participants are American, you can expect that 75% of the complaints about Subaru problems are going to come from America. Just my two cents' worth.

Funny 'the reports' is a pretty subjective thing. I have seen articles and reviews that laud Subaru for their outstanding quality. Yet, you don't have any links to 'the reports'. Any idiot can write a report.

I dont think ANYONE is going to take YOUR word for it. All you do is bitch about a car that you probably dont even own. Everyone who has a problem with their Subaru, any model, is the same problems you will find in ANY other car forum regardless of manufacturer. People buy a car because of its reputation, or just because they like it. I know an 80 year old man that has owned nothing but hondas, and never has problems. But again, he drives 20 miles a week at 25 mph. Get in a turbocharged car thats just plain fun to drive, and its bound to have its share of problems. I have a 2002 wrx with 75k on it, running 11.2's in the quarter, and I drive it almost 200 miles over the course of EACH day. Did I have problems? yes, but NOTHING that I didnt induce. Gee why would the front wheel bearings blow out? Maybe taking offramps at 95 mph EVERY DAY has something to do with it. Still running the stock clutch. You act like Subaru is the only one that has "bad" paint. Im not going to point out all your ignorant comments, because, quite frankly, your not worth it. But dont tell people who might ACTUALLY want your advice NOT to buy something based on shit you hear. Your a moron.

I own three Subies, a '95 impreza with 185K miles on it, a '99 SUS Limited edtion with 85K miles on, and a 2005 WRX with 3K miles on it. These are the best cars I've ever owned (compared to three Hondas, Nissans, a Volvo, and the crappiest POS car I have ever owned, a '95 Plymouth Voyager AWD minivan).

The fun factor of the WRX is beyond belief. Go to

Driving every day at 95Mph on offramps? YOUR the moron! A LOT of you jerks in these little tincans drive them like your the only one on the road.I CAN see this on a closed course, but NOT on a public road! Drive like a jerk, we treat you like a jerk. For my truck...it's only sheetmetal, I couldnt care less if I destroy it taking out a WRX...I will have another one by the weekend. One day they will bury you in that little shitbox, they won't even bother to pry it open with a sawsall and you will deserve it.I Had one of your little cohorts try that shit on me on a canyon road,I gave him the choice of a collision or dive into the dirt, looked great in my mirror. When he tried to pass me on a curve(over a double yellow line) I changed lanes into him hahahaha. Not much of a fight with a 3/4 ton ford truck. He had the choice of getting pitted or hit the dirt..I'm still smiling. He didnt continue to follow me, dont think it ran anymore.I didnt find any of that "Cheesy" dark blue paint on the old 351 powered beast, guess I won that confrontation hahahaha. Now thats *MY* kind of race.

My mother always told me to never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. And, you aliving proof that God had an affinity for idiots; He sure produced enough of them. You shouldn't even have a license, much less an opinion.

There are indeed some common problems with the USDM WRX. The

2002-2003 models suffer from an overly sensitive ABS system which will occasionally activates ABS on all wheels, even if slippage is only on one. This doesn't happen often, but when it does, you'll just about crap your pants if there's anything ahead of you. It can be overcome with HUGE pedal pressure, but it happens so infrequently on good pavement that you're usually not ready for it. There's a DOT investigation into it now, but Subaru was, and still is in official "denial". Reason is that it's bad logic hard coded into the ABS ECU, and there's no way to reflash it like the engine ECU. So to fix the problem (which is well documented on NASIOC and elsewhere), they would have to replace the ABS modules on every car. The problem is corrected in the MY04 and later models.

The MY04 has an engine mapping problem that results in fuel cut and violent engine "bucking" under certain lift-throttle conditions. I don't have an '04, so that's all I can tell you about that one, except that it's an engine calibration problem that can be fixed with an ECU reflash, and the MY02-03's don't do this.

My 03 WRX wagon is an absolute blast to drive, I smile every time I have to go anywhere, and I drive for the sheer enjoyment of it almost as much as for transportation.

I sometimes wonder about the real life personalities of this type of troll. I mean, is he a six foot nine pot bellied redneck with tats? Or is he a little chap with a small person's inferiority complex? As I said, some times I wonder about them. Mostly though, I just ignore them.

Since English is obviously not your first language...

"Your" is the posessive form of "you" and is properly used as in the following example:

"The university where you acquired *your* doctorate obviously doesn't teach very good English to its post-graduate students."

"You're" is a contraction of "you are" and is properly used as in the following example:

"*You're* a real fucknick if you think that disapproval of somebody's driving is grounds for intentionally causing traffic accidents.

I hope the above grammar lesson will help you to improve your usage of our difficult language.

Having owned three wrx's from new with seven years of driving them I think that i can add my opinion with some "authority" from experience and not just report reading. The following is the list of what I ve had/got

  1. 1997 Club Spec WRX
  2. 2000 WRX
3 and the recntly aquired 2005 WRX STI

The first one had minor mods (pipe, intake, boost) and did have some gear box syncro problems that were fixed under warranty, had to pay for the new clutch which was basically on the rivots However as also previously stated by someone I feel that these were clomplety due to the way it was driven. I was forever launching at 5500rpm, competing at track days and drag racing in ti. So you would expect to have these types of problems. Thats racing as they say

The 2000 wrx was heavily modified (intake, turbo, pipe, etc etc) and the only problem I had with it in the four years was the airflow meter. This car didnt get the hard time that the first one had but it wasnt babied either (did very few hard launches though which does help)

The STI I have only had for two weeks so I cant comment on its reliability at this stage. But after driving wrxs for seven years I would say that I am fairly familiar with this car and when the time came for the new one another wrx was an easy decsdion to make, it was only a case of would i get a wrx or a wrx sti.

By the way I live in Australia
