1997 Ford F350 AC compressor

My AC compressor recently seized up on my 1997 F350 7.3L Diesel after 90,000 miles. It's a heck of a job replacing all the components and flushing the system to restore operation. I'd rather it not happen again. In disassembling my old FS10 compressor, I found no wear at all. Just a simple seizure from no lubrication from the PAG oil/R134A refrigerant. Do these newer CFC free AC systems need more maintenence, such as adding oil ect? I don't mind paying a couple hundred bucks every couple years to maintain the system if that's what it takes. Anybody in the business have any insight on this? Thanks, Ron Hansen

Short answers:

1) Yes, R-134a systems generally need more TLC than R-12 systems did 2) The Ford FS-10 compressor, IIRC, is regarded as a troublemaker. 3) A couple of things that you can do to prevent future troubles:

-try to avoid ever opening the system, and if you do keep the time its left open to an absolute minimum, and ALWAYS replace the drier when you do open it. Buy small bottles of PAG oil, and don't use any that's been opened and then stored more than a few days. PAG and POE oils absorb humidity more eagerly than brake fluid does, and it damages their ability to lubricate and forms acids in the system

-use "double-end-capped" PAG oil. Its chemically stabilized and is a lot better behaved than the original PAG oils were.
