2000 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L overheating issue

This guy supposedly bought this vehicle in '01 with 1800 miles on it. It now has around 40k and he say's it's always run a bit hot. He brought it into the local shop for head work I guess from finally overheating it. Anyways, he had a new head put on, and the mechanic noticed it still has a bit of a overheating issue. Upon further inspection he notices the water pump isn't pumping the fluid. He removes the pump and the impeller is mostly gone.. Ok He purchases a new water pump from our store and he installs it.. Still same problem. The pump doesn't move the fluid. He double checked his belt routing and it is correct. He tells us it needs a reverse rotation water pump, but they don't list one for 2000. the funny thing is they DO list one for 1990. We're beginning to think this might be an older motor in this jeep, but it only had 1800 miles when he bought it. We sold him the one for the 1990 2.5L and all is good EXCEPT the water pump shaft is longer than what came off and the serpentine belt doesn't line up now.. We are stumped

I'm still leaning towards an older motor was thrown in this jeep.. Any other suggestions, ideas???

s a reverse rotation water pump,

By looking at the new pump impellers and by the direction of how it is now turning, you should be able to tell if he has the correct pump or if he needs the other pump.

reverse rotation water pump,

Just look at how it's driven. If it has a standard V belt driven off the crank pulley it's standard rotation. If it is driven off the back side of the belt with a flat sheave it's reverse rotation.
